Our First Piece...

While my composition career has only been 2 and a half weeks long, I think I've found the hardest part. Getting started. I have written the first 3 or 4 measures of my first piece about 4 or 5 times! I'm finding it hard to get into an idea that I like, and that I will enjoy writing for the duration of this assignment. I have a feeling that once I get over this hump it will go more smoothly.

Here's hoping...

Different people may have different ideas as to what the 'hardest parts' of composing are, but I'm pretty sure most would agree that getting started -- or more accurately, coming up with an opening that you feel good about -- is one of them.

So, hang in there, because we all can relate!

I have two suggestions to offer you:

• Persevere; you WILL get past this initial difficulty! and

• The quality of your initial idea -- your opening -- matters, but not as much as most people think. Try to come up with something that seems "okay," or "pretty good," then keep going from there. Composing involves a lot of revising earlier material as you proceed forward with new material, and you can always find a way to improve on the opening later, should there be a need. The point is to keep moving forward, and not to allow any particular section (like the opening) to prevent you from doing so.

You can also drop by my office to show me what you've got some time, if you like, and I can try to help by giving you some ideas as to what you can do with your material.
